FLC leads faculty to enhanced classroom experiences

The Center for Teaching Excellence has completed its second annual summer Faculty Learning Community project, and nine full-time faculty members are ready to take their research, collaboration and new ideas into the classroom.

The professors, whose disciplines range across the board, spent the summer researching and studying best practices in teaching for first-year students and gateway courses. The 2019 cohort brainstormed ways to apply their research to their courses. They will implement their newly configured courses as the 2019-20 academic year begins on Monday.

After implementation, the revised courses will be assessed and results shared in the spring semester. Last year’s inaugural Faculty Learning Community was deemed a success as faculty members saw improvements in student engagement, learning and success in the participating courses.

FLC participating members this summer included: Andy Aebly (chemistry), Nate Beres (chemistry), Jena Suffel (health sciences), Lauren McGraw (health sciences), Morgan Kocher (exercise science), Carol Dusdieker (music), Barry Devine (English), Amy Berger (geology and environmental science) and David Hogan (history).
